Every ingredient and component of Ultragen is engineered to be absorbed within the critical thirty-minute glycogen window. Unlike whey protein concentrate or soy protein, Ultragen’s hydrolyzed and isolate whey proteins are very small di and tri-peptide molecules that get absorbed quickly. The carbohydrates come exclusively from the highest glycemic sugar available-glucose, which means it gets absorbed faster than any other carbohydrate. Athletes, especially endurance athletes, require higher levels of protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. Ultragen delivers everything your body requires to maximize recovery so you can be ready for the next day of training or racing.
For maximum recovery, mix only in water and consume immediately after exercise. Do not consume any other foods or drinks for at least 30 minutes after taking Ultragen as this will slow down Ultragen’s fast absorption. Thirty minutes after using Ultragen you can drink and eat something else.

Does the “no other food or drink” include water? I only take 1/2 an ultragen after my 10-mile run, but usually keep drinking water.

ily,
Great question. Water is fine to have with Ultragen, or imediately following. Unlike any juices or milk, water will not slow down absorption. Have you noticed how quickly Ultragen gets absorbed?

Kirk,
Absolutely you can use Ultragen during exercise. Though we don’t market the product this way it can be very effective if done right. As you know Ultragen was designed to get absorbed really, really fast which is key when you take anything during exercise. And because its fortified with fast absorbing protein, electrolytes, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins and minerals you do get quite a boost. Its best to use a product like EFS as your primary fuel and when necessary consider ONE serving of Ultragen during an exercise bout. Do to its heavy caloric formula, typically you would use Ultragen for a very long exercise bout and only during the latter half. Many of our Tour riders will take a serving with an hour to go to the finish of a stage..like a bit mountain stage..Our Ironman athletes will take a serving during their 2nd transition right before the run. Hope this helps. Have you tried using Ultragen during exercise?

I agree with this use of Ultragen. This year during the Mid Mountain Trail Marathon, I was seriously behind on calories with GI issues while using a Non-First Endurance Gel product. I had an emergency packet of Ultragen which I mixed up at mile 19. This saved my butt, and allowed me to resume running, when otherwise, I would have been heading to a really bad-feeling place.

I used UltraGen for several months while ultra running, but always had GI issues after using it. I emailed FE support and we came to the conclusion that I was consuming too much protein. So, for 24 hours prior to UltraGen use, I didn’t use any other protein supplement and limited protein in my diet, but still had the GI problems after using UltraGen. I only used EFS during my workouts too. Since then, I haven’t used UltraGen. Any ideas? I would love to start using it again, I still remember the incredible feeling in my muscles from using UltraGen. It was amazing at how fast I was able to recover!

Vance,
Thank you again for contacting First Endurance. With Ultragen designed to be absorbed very fast and very easily, gastric distress is very rare. I highly suspect there are other variables involved that are causing the GI issues. How can I contact you directly so we can work together to figure out what is causing the GI issues? You can e-mail me directly at rkunz@firstendurance.com.

ultragen..i started using today (endurance road cyclist). label says “contains milk” and i am lactose intolerant. is the milk via the protein? i took lactaid just to be safe. please eloborate.

Ron,
Ultragen uses a highly purified whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey protein. Both these methods remove the carbohydrates and fats leaving only the pure protein. So even though whey is derived from milk, the lactose (a sugar) is removed so it is safe to use for anyone that is lactose intolerant.

Can Ultragen be used before a training session to give you the stamina to complete a heavy work out. Sometimes I feel a bit lagging towards the tail end of my session

Jbass,
Though Ultragen can be used pre-exercise, it was not intended for this purpose. I do know many of our top pro athlete like to make an Ultragen shake in the morning before their workout because it gets absorbed fast and is easy on the stomach. Where you have to be careful is that Ultragen, when mixed with water, is high glycemic, meaning it gets absorbed fast, quickly raises your blood sugar and if you don’t begin exercise within about 45 minutes, blood sugar will begin to crash. So an effective use is to either mix it with other nutrients so you reduce the glycemic index a bit, or make sure to begin exercise 30-45 minutes after consuming your Ultragen.
