Beijing Olympics: First Endurance sponsored swimmer Jason Lezak, who saved Michael Phelps’ chance for eight gold medals, finally got an individual medal for himself. The hero of the 4 x 100 men’s relay race made good on the feeling that “has been eating at him for four years” – an individual Olympic medal. Lezak was able to finally rebound to form (after the physically demanding 4 x 100 earlier this week) to take home bronze in the men’s 100 meter Freestyle this morning. “It feels really good,” Lezak said. “Definitely a huge mistake I made four years ago by taking the prelims too lightly. It has been eating at me for a long time, and for me to go out there and accomplish that medal – I am really excited.” Jason and Brazilian Cesar Cielo Filho were each awarded the bronze medal. The pair both touched in 47.67.
“I was obviously shooting for the gold medal, but just to win any medal feels really good,” Lezak said. “It feels like everything I’ve done over my career has paid off.”
Said Bernard, “I had incredible opponents — Jason Lezak, who was so fast in the relay and is able to accelerate in the last stretch. … I really took it to heart when we lost the 100-meter relay.”
The gold medal Jason won in the dramatic relay was Lezak’s fifth medal over three Games, but Thursday’s was the first in an individual event and erases a bitter personal disappointment from four years ago.
