Middaugh claims 2008 US National Snowshoe Title

Places 2nd in 2008 Xterra Winter World Championships

March 16th, 2008 – Snowbasin, Ut –One day after finishing 2nd (by one second) in the inaugural Xterra Winter World Championships at Snowbasin Resort in Utah, Josiah Middaugh crushed the field to win his third U.S. National Snowshoe Championship.

Middaugh ran the snowshoe championship with some additional motivation after the results from the previous day’s 2nd place finish in the Xterra World Championship.  Going into the last leg of the race, Middaugh enjoyed a two-minute lead on all his top rivals.  Choosing to ski the Alpine course on cross-country gear, Middaugh saw all two minutes disappear on the downhill portion where his rivals used beefier Alpine Touring gear.  With three gates left in the race, Middaugh struggled to stay on course while he watched his rivals fly by. ”I did everything I could do,” said Middaugh.  “I thought if I could make all those gates without falling then maybe I’d be ok but I was lying on my back half way down.” Middaugh proved he was the fittest competitor on the course by winning the next day’s National Snowshoe Championship.
