How do I Eliminate Gastric Distress in Ironman?

Posted on 27 July 2010

By Neal Henderson MS, CSCS
Competing effectively in Ironman requires equal parts physical, mental, and nutritional strategies.  Many athletes place too much emphasis on the physical and mental preparation and go into the race without a solid plan for their nutritional needs.  Because an Ironman race can take between 8 and 17 hours to complete, there [...]

Sodium Loading for Long Hot Races

It is recommended to try sodium loading before race simulation training sessions that are completed in the same environmental conditions as your race. This should be tried throughout your intensity training block to customize the quantity and timing based on your body’s responses.

How to Implement a Sodium Loading Protocol

The initial review and research on sodium loading was conducted by First Endurance Board Member Bob Seebohar, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS.   This protocol was posted on the team.firstendurance.com site HERE.

Many of the First Endurance Pro and Amateur Triathletes have used this protocol with great success for long, hot races.  Loading with sodium the 24 hours leading up to the race and then racing with EFS drink results in a race where no additional electrolyte tablets are needed and where cramping and hyponatremia is eliminated.   A special thanks goes to Pro’s Heather and Trevor Wurtele who produced a nice video highlighting their personalized sodium loading protocol.
